4 Pinterest Marketing Mistakes To Be Aware Of

Leveraging Pinterest for your business is a game-changer!

We all wish for more website traffic. To get hundreds, if not thousands, of eyes into your world and onto your products and services, is a dream come true for any business. Pinterest has the ability to do that for you and more. But before you go pinning away, it’s important to understand what NOT to do. Read on for rookie mistakes to avoid.

LET’S GET INTO THE JUICE!

Here are 4 Rookie Mistakes To Be Aware Of:

1. Not knowing who you’re pinning for.

Your entire Pinterest business strategy is dependent upon who you’re pinning for. You probably hear this a lot when it comes to building a successful business, but it’s true for so many areas, including Pinterest. When it comes to Pinterest, here are some cold, hard facts you need to know. Success on Pinterest is dependent upon a keyword strategy. (More on that in mistake #2.) If you are unaware of the dreams, desires, hobbies, frustrations, and needs of your ideal customer, you will not be able to create the keywords needed to attract your audience.

2. Failing to create a keyword strategy.

Pinterest is a search engine, not a social media platform. Therefore your keyword strategy is going to play an integral part in your overall success on Pinterest.

Think of this similarly to SEO (Search Engine Optimization), which is a process of making your website easy to find and index by search engines.

There are two main ways that someone could come across your content on Pinterest if they don’t follow you already: through active search, or through passive discovery. So to boost your changes of being found via an active search, it's important to have the right words surrounding your content.

3. Pinning personal content on your account.

From an audience strategy perspective, your Pinterest boards are not for you - they're for your ideal client. So if you decide not to convert your personal account, remember, anything that you pin that's not in line with what your client avatar needs or is looking for, will hurt your account. We know, we know. Losing your personal account sounds like a nightmare. And we get that. Creating a new account specifically for your business is an option as well! Just know that, it’s highly recommended to have a specific business account.

When you create a business account, you gain access to a lot of Pinterest benefits that you wouldn’t have otherwise such a special Pin formats like rich pins, a business hub, analytics, the ability to spot emerging trends and more.

4. Re-pinning old content.

Pinterest favors pinners who pin FRESH content. Now we’re not saying you can pin an old blogpost. You can absolutely do that. In fact, if you have multiple boards that your blogpost would file nicely into, definitely pin that blogpost as many times as you can. The issue comes in when you fail to change the graphic that you use to pin that post. It’s important to use a fresh graphic every time you post in order to make the Pinterest algorithm happy.

Here are a few hot takes from our Pinterest course.

  1. The pros on Pinterest... the ones who are leading the charge and killing it on the platform... are pinning 15 - 20 fresh pins A DAY.

  2. For content ideas, Pinterest compiles trends for what types of topics are most popular on the platform. Look to them to gather ideas for your Pinterest content strategy.

  3. It’s important to claim your website. Claiming your website ties all of the pins that link to your website to your specific account. This allows users on Pinterest to see your profile clearly at the top whenever they view one of your pins (or one that points to your website).
